Toy animals have always been important playthings in children’s lives, often being the first pet.
A range of clay animals were made in the Indus Valley (northwestern regions of South Asia) around 2,800BC. Many of the animals were votive offerings, a small camel was found in a grave from 1,491BC.
A variety of animals came from Egypt and many that survive were made of clay but there were also wooden ones.
